WHAT TO EXPECT

Horseback Riding at Autumn's Gate

We pride ourselves on providing a unique and personalized riding experience for all levels of riders. Before you saddle up and join us for this remarkable adventure…

here’s everything. you need to know!

Preparing for Your Ride

To ensure you have the best experience, we recommend the following preparations:

  • Dress for the Occasion: Wear weather-appropriate clothing. While we aim to ride outdoors whenever the weather permits, our indoor arena is ready for those less-than-perfect days. Long pants, preferably jeans, are ideal.
  • Footwear: Boots with a heel, such as riding, muck, rain, or winter boots, are recommended, as it helps riders keep their feet in the stirrups. Sneakers are acceptable in a pinch, but please, no open-toed shoes.
  • Safety First: Your safety is our top priority. We provide ASTM/SEI Certified riding helmets, but you’re welcome to bring your own, provided it meets safety standards. Bike helmets do NOT meet safety requirements.

What does the horse wear?

Before mounting a horse, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the equipment the horse is adorned with, commonly referred to as the “tack.” The tack is designed to aid in communication between the rider and the horse, while also ensuring the comfort and safety of both. Depending on the horse’s individual needs and the type of riding you’ll be doing, the tack can vary. However, generally, the tack will include:

  • A bridle, which is fitted onto the horse’s head. The bridle includes the bit, the piece that goes in the horse’s mouth, and the reins, which the rider holds to direct the horse. The bridle plays a crucial role in guiding the horse and communicating the rider’s commands.
  • A saddle, which is placed on the horse’s back to provide the rider with stability and comfort during riding. Saddles come in various styles to suit different equestrian activities, such as jumping, dressage, or trail riding.
  • A saddle pad, positioned underneath the saddle, acts as a protective barrier to cushion the horse’s back, absorbing sweat and reducing friction from the saddle. This is essential for preventing sores and ensuring the horse remains comfortable during rides.

Understanding the purpose and proper use of each piece of tack not only enhances the riding experience but is also vital for the horse’s wellbeing.

What should I expect to learn?

*May vary with each curriculum developed for the I individual rider and by instructor preference.

Mounting: The first step in horse riding is mastering how to mount. Your instructor will guide you through the correct and safe methods for both mounting and dismounting.

Balance and Control: Once you are in the saddle, mastering balance and body control becomes crucial. Achieving unity with the horse requires fine-tuning your seating position and center of balance. A key component in this process is learning how to post. This technique helps you rise from the horse’s back and synchronize your movements with his while trotting, establishing balance and harmony.

Stopping and Steering: With a solid foundation in balance, the next skills to focus on are stopping and steering. These are critical for both correct and safe horse riding.

The Gaits: After mastering your seating position and learning the basics of stopping and steering, you will then move on to guiding the horse through different gaits, including walk, trot, canter, and halt.
